On Friday, May 28th students in Division 5-12 will learn how to weave with cedar bark and make a small mat. Jess Silvey, a Coast Salish weaver, will provide instruction via Zoom on the techniques of plaiting and twining. Ms. Silvey is providing us with the inner bark of Western Red Cedar that she has collected and processed.
This activity will provide students with the opportunity to engage in an ADST activity with local materials to further their knowledge of Coast Salish culture. It is in keeping with our school’s focus on the First Peoples Principles of Learning, in particular that learning takes time and patience and the role of Indigenous knowledge.
